Happy New Year! Ready! Set ! Go!
There is a simple theory that many people just don’t know. It is about goal setting. The simple fact is that if you set a goal and WRITE IT DOWN you are more likely to achieve that goal. I have been a goal oriented worker all my life. I love setting goals. But I was frankly astonished the first time I took a goal setting work shop. I found that as a result of actually putting a plan down in orderly fashion on paper and then reviewing the goal on a weekly basis, I achieved the goal easily. It was not difficult.
What changed? I stopped holding my goals in my head. The first of the year, like millions of others, I would set a goal to “lose weight” and get back in shape. I would eat well for several days and work out like a nut. Then, little by little, the world would consume my time and my goal was out the window. Sound familiar? It is a common problem.
As a result of writing the goals, and visiting the goal list each week, I was able to continue to be reminded of the goal and allow for daily decisions to be reflected in getting to the goal each week. It was more fun if I wrote down my weekly successes as well.
I have shared this concept with many of my clients on many levels but the most rewarding for me and the clients has been with first time home buyers. Many of these young people have not been taught about the importance of maintaining good credit. Many more don’t have a lot of money in savings. As a result they think they will never own a home. If you think you won’t do something, you are not likely to actually do it!
Several great young couples this past year are now proud homeowners. They believed me when I told them that if they set a goal to own a home and, seriously wanted to own a home, then they would find the ability to set the goal and do the small things on a weekly basis to make the goal. Something as little as giving up a morning Starbucks run helped one couple get to the home ownership they thought was just a dream. They both gave up a $10 a day habit and began to make their lunches. In less than six months they had the down payment they had not been able to save. They had no idea that a small daily decision like “don’t spend the money” would actually set them up for a lifetime.
Another couple had three small children. They arranged for the mom to get a part time job. She elected to wait until dad came home each day and four nights a week delivered pizza. She made it a fun break for herself from the madness and had the personality to get “tips” that were amazing! She made enough in one year to make a difference in the affordability of a first home with potential for a secondary living unit on the property. The following year they made a written plan of how to improve the apartment and get it rented. They now have a monthly income off the property and she has weekend nights with her family again.
Bottom line is this: make a plan, work the plan, and the plan will actually work for YOU! Call me and I will help you write the plan!
