Happy Fall everyone! You all know that I just love this time of year. Days are shorter, sunlight is filled with the golden glow of the harvest moon and sun, and, apart from the terrible fires we have, I do love it.
It is time to make sure all the detectors are functioning correctly. TEST THEM. Go online and there are several really good ways to test smoke detectors. I use the old fashion method: I burn some toast! Crank up the setting on the toaster, set it out in the center of your island, chop block, or in the way of the hall, and burn a piece of bread. This smells nasty but it is the best way I know to really be sure the thing is WORKING! Then change the batteries if it doesn’t detect the toast burn. Something that small should set it off nicely.
While you are in the mood for that test, ask yourself when you last replaced the carbon monoxide detectors. They are all different. Do NOT try testing them in the above fashion, but rather search for online resources on how to test your carbon monoxide detector.
Finally, while you are busy testing, take a moment to change the light bulbs outside of your home and garage. Having well lighted ways to enter your home in the dark is a wise idea any time of year. But, since the days are shorter now, you may come home late to a porch light out. I change bulbs and check rain gutters this time of year to be sure everything is ready for late night home arrivals. I just HATE driving up to a dark porch. So check things out, and get ready for a lovely Halloween season.
